Panerai unveils a new version of the Mare Nostrum, one of its rarest creations and the Italian Maison’s first chronograph.
Today’s Mare Nostrum Acciaio directly recalls a model released in 1993.
Itself inspired by prototypes from the 1940s,designed for officers of the Royal Italian Navy.

The Mare Nostrum Replicas Watches
The Mare Nostrum, the first chronograph from the Italian Maison Panerai, returns to the forefront with a new 2017 edition inspired by the same 1993 model.
The history of this model is quite remarkable:according to some historians, the first prototypes date back to 1943 and were intended for the deck officers of the Royal Italian Navy, with Panerai being their official supplier at the time.
While all traces of this chronograph had completely disappeared, only one of these prototypes has been found.
This rare instrument, now on display at the Panerai Museum, along with its few related documents, survived the great Florence flood of 1966.
They would later be used to create the Mare Nostrum in 1993.
This smaller version of the original Mare Nostrum replicas watches is inextricably linked to the Italian Maison’s”pre-Vendôme”period.

This period spans from 1993,the year of the first Italian collection not intended for military use, until 1997,when Officine Panerai joined the Richemont Group.
This first”civilian”watch line comprises some of the rarest and most valuable timepieces for collectors today, and the Mare Nostrum remains its most sought-after model.
The 2017 edition
The 2017 edition is a limited series of 1,000 pieces, faithfully reproducing the design and functions of its non-military predecessors.
This is why its case diameter is 42 mm,whereas the 1943 prototypes had a 52 mm diameter.
Equipped with a deep blue dial and a matching strap, this chronograph pays the finest tribute to the”pre-Vendôme”version,sure to appeal to devotees of vintage Italian watches.
The Mare Nostrum Acciaio 2017 is presented in a wooden box which,in addition to a second leather strap and a screwdriver, includes a scale model of the Durand De La Penne:
An Italian Navy destroyer, renowned for its wartime service which earned it the Gold Medal for Military Valor,Italy’s highest military decoration.

Why this ship in particular?
Because it was aboard this vessel that the 1993 Mare Nostrum was unveiled,on September 10th to be precise.
Available in stores since June, this new stainless steel edition features a bezel engraved with a tachymeter scale.
Its case,water-resistant to 50 meters, houses an OP XXXIII caliber, customized by Panerai and COSC certified, just like the”pre-Vendôme”model.
