An iconic IWC collection, the Portugieser celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.
Launched in 1939,the Portugieser reference 325 was born from the proposal of two Portuguese merchants to create a wristwatch housing a movement capable of rivaling the precision of a marine chronometer.
A considerable challenge,as at that time, this type of watch was only available in pocket size(precision being the strong point of pocket watches due to their larger size).

To design its Replica Watches,IWC used the caliber 74 savonnette-style movement, named for its winding stem located at 3 o’clock,as well as the caliber 98.
The round case of the first Portugieser, measuring 43 mm,contrasted sharply with the small Art Deco-style timepieces that flooded the market.
The trend at the time was for tiny cases, often square or rectangular, with minimalist dials.
Until the 1990s,the diameter of a men’s wristwatch was often 35 mm,6.5 mm smaller than the reference 325.
The Portugieser features a crisp, contrasting dial with white hour markers and numerals on a black background.
A slim bezel, sage leaf hands, and a large subdial at 6 o’clock to indicate the seconds.
Its timeless, sporty, unique, and distinguished character makes the reference 325 a pioneering timepiece.
To celebrate the brand’s 125th anniversary,IWC released a limited edition of the Portugieser in 1993,a Jubilee version,reference 5441,with a 42 mm case.
This is the first model in this collection to feature a sapphire crystal case back, allowing a view of the caliber 9828 movement.
Inspired by a variant of the reference 325,this special edition rekindles interest in the reference 325 models.

The Portugieser Replica Watches family expanded
Subsequently,the Portugieser family expanded to include grand complications:these include a minute repeater(ref.5240),a split-seconds chronograph(ref.3712).
The Mystery Tourbillon(ref.5042),and the renowned sporty and elegant 40.9 mm automatic chronograph(ref.3714),IWC’s greatest horological success.
With its Perpetual Calendar(ref.5021),IWC holds the record for precision, with an accuracy of one day every 577 years.
A turning point came with the release in 2000 of the automatic Portugieser with the caliber 5000,notable for its seven-day power reserve.
The caliber 5000 became a staple for IWC,which added numerous modules to this base movement for subsequent models.
Now a true legend, the Portugieser is a classic watch with a clean, minimalist style, combining legibility and high precision, and still embodies the brand’s expertise today.
Worn by influential figures, artists, enthusiasts, and collectors alike, the Portugieser is a timeless choice that complements any style.
